When Did God Change His Mind On The Sabbath Day?

Name: David Reynaert
Question: When did God change His mind on the Sabbath Day? What other commandments did He change His mind on?

Answer: David,

Good evening.

I wouldn’t say God changed His mind, He is the same today and forever, (Mal 3:6).

However, some prophecies have been fulfilled, correct?

In the Old Testament, our Heavenly Father required blood sacrifice to atone for sin. However, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ into the world to become the final sacrifice, for all people. When Jesus perished on the cross, that removed many of the laws from the past.

Today, we no longer have to sacrifice to atone for our sins, correct?

So, as you can see, somethings have changed, but God did not change.

Now, let’s pop over to the New Testament to see what Jesus and the Disciples did on the Sabbath Day.

Mrk 2:23 And it came to pass, that he [Jesus] went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.

Mrk 2:24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

Mrk 2:25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?

Mrk 2:26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

Mrk 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

Mrk 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

As you can see, even in the Old Testament, David himself broke a command.

Why did David eat?

Read the Old Testament story, but it was so the men had nourishment. Nevertheless, Jesus continues by telling us, the sabbath was made for man, for our rest. Not that we were bound to the sabbath. Christ concludes saying, He is Lord of the sabbath.

So Jesus and the Disciples worked on the sabbath, they picked corn and ate it. Jesus also did work on the sabbath by healing people, (Mark 3). Therefore, Christ is telling us, He removed this ordinance, just as His sacrifice removed blood sacrifice from our midst.

I actually have some studies that I would love for you to read:
